One To Watch: Santigold

We’re probably not telling you about an artist you’ve never heard of before by highlighting Santigold, but the Brooklyn artist is looking to have a big year.

Santigold, formerly known as Santogold and born Santi White, was previously the singer of Philadelphia punk rock band Stiffed, who released two albums in 2003 and 2005. It was during her time in Stiffed that Santigold was offered a solo recording contract with Lizard King Records. The singer’s solo debut, Santogold, was released in April 2008 and produced by John Hill, as well as Diplo and Switch. The disc generation a slew of hit singles and landed on a large number of “best of” lists at the end of that year.

After the release of Santogold, the singer toured with M.I.A., Coldplay, Bjork and Beastie Boys, and performed at festivals like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. She also made guest appearances on numerous tracks, including numbers on Christina Aguilera’s Bionic and Beastie Boys’ Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.

Santigold’s second album, a highly anticipated follow-up to Santogold, is set to come out April 23. The disc, titled Master of My Make-Believe, was co-produced with TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek and features Diplo, Switch and Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner. So far the disc has yielded three singles: “GO!” featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, “Big Mouth” and “Disparate Youth.”

The singer told Billboard of the album, “I wanted it to feel dynamic and powerful. I still have the songs that sound very electronic and clubby, but I have a couple ballads on this one – my own type of ballads, where they just sound big, like the way some old Kate Bush or Peter Gabriel songs were.”
