In wow-we-really-didn’t-see-this-coming news Avril Lavigne and Nickelback’s frontman Chad Kroeger are engaged. Apparently, they have been dating for six months, although the Canadian duo kept things so under wraps that most people had no idea they were even an item.

Lavigne (27) and Kroeger (37) met back in February to co-write a song for Lavigne’s upcoming album, and the couple apparently hit it off in the studio. “A romantic relationship blossomed as they spent time writing together,” a friend of Lavigne told People while a family source added, “He makes her so happy. Both of their families could not be more excited.”

Kroeger popped the question on August 8th when he presented her with a 14-carat-diamond ring or whatever the metric equivalent of that is. This will be Kroeger’s first marriage and the second union for Lavigne, who was previously married to Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley. There is no word about the wedding yet, but if their engagement is any indication, we probably won’t know about it until it’s over.
