New Show Report Card: ‘Breaking Pointe’
.
The Black Swan reality show we always dreamed of, Breaking Pointe, has finally premiered and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s the perfect storm:  a close-knit ballet company equipped with brothers, lovers and the high stakes, cutthroat behavior you would expect from the ensemble. And who doesn’t love the show’s double entendre name?

After we meet the cast of characters – Ronnie and Rex, the two brothers who both date girls in the company, Christiana the prima ballerina of the crew, and Beckanne the new girl whose quickly taken to soring principal roles and making others jealous – we are quickly thrown into the world of contract renewals. Some will be signed on for the next year, and some wont. Check out the character introductions here.

The bitchiness is apparent and the judgmental ballerina faces are definitely not staged. Feelings are expressed like “There is always someone waiting in the wings to take your place.” And as soon as contracts are handing out you can feel the tension in the air. You never know if your good enough, perfect enough to make the cut.
.

Strength of Episode:  B+
The company is immediately intriguing because of the bond that the dancers clearly have together – two parts camaraderie and one part ruthless.  The pilot episode felt like a long introduction, which was clearly needed as I’m a novice into that world, but I expect more real story arcs to develop.
.
Strength of Characters: A-
The characters all seem very real. I know that sounds cliché for a reality show but feeling the pressure, the disappointment and the jealousy is something we can all relate to – but this ballet troupe serves as the perfect pressure cooker all in one. I’m excited to see the tensions that will obviously surface.
.
Likelihood to be liked by men: B
I definitely think this is mainly a ladies show, specifically a younger ladies dream show. Especially if you’ve ever taken ballet or been apart of a competitive dance troupe. While we can all relate, its definitely going to speak most to young ladies who once had a dream.
.
Potential Strength of Season to Come: B+
I think that as the season goes on, tensions will only mount and we might see a few Black Swans show their true vindictive colors against one another. Isn’t that what we are all waiting for?
.
Overall Grade: B+
