And, in order to properly celebrate this monumental moment in Sum 41 history, we’ve decided to take a trip down memory lane where we explore the band’s history — from their humble beginnings in a Canadian basement to their emergence as a globally dominant rock band. Check out a history of Sum 41 below.
.
1996: The band Kaspir is formed by singer-songwriter Deryck Whibley, drummer Steve Jocz and original guitarist Marc Costanzo in Ajax, Ontario, Canada.
.
1997: Guitarist Dave Baksh replaces Costanzo and around this time the band also change their name to Sum 41.
.
1998: Sum 41 record their first demo and send it around in hopes of getting signed. This demo will also prove to be their only release featuring original bassist Richard Roy who is replaced by Cone McCaslin shortly afterward.
.
2000: In June, the band release the EP Half Hour Of Power. The EP goes gold in Canada, a fact which encourages the band to record and release their first full-length.
.
2001: Sum 41’s debut full-length, All Killer, No Filler, is released in May and the single “Fat Lip” becomes an instant success, hitting the top spot on the U.S. Billboard Modern Rock chart.
.
2001: Sum 41 hit the road with a vengeance, playing over 300 shows this year alone.
.
2002: All Killer, No Filler is nominated for a Juno Award for “Best Album,” however Sum 41 lose to Diana Krall. Seriously?
.
2002: In November, the band release their second album, Does This Look Infected?, which features a more aggressive, melodic punk sound than its predecessor.
.
2003: Iggy Pop recruits Sum 41 to play on the song “Little Know It All,” the first single from his album Skull Ring, which is also co-written by Whibley.
.
2004: The band travels to the Democratic Republic Of Congo to document the country’s civil war. While the band are there, fighting breaks out near their hotel and they are eventually rescued by United Nations peacekeeper Charles “Chuck” Pelletier.
.
2004: The band name their third full-length Chuck after Pelletier. This is the band’s heaviest effort yet and also their highest-charting album to this point.
.
2005: After numerous nominations, the band finally win a Juno Award for “Rock Album Of The Year” for Chuck. Krall presumably doesn’t release an album this year.
.
2006: Dave Baksh announces that he is leaving Sum 41 to work on his new “classic metal”-influenced band Brown Brigade.
.
2007: Sum 41 release their fourth full-length album, Underclass Hero, and enlist Tom Thacker on guitar as a new member (although the album is recorded as a trio.) Underclass Hero soon hits the top spot on the Canadian Albums and Alternative Albums charts.
.
2007: McCaslin talks to Slash about his experiences in Velvet Revolver and Guns N’ Roses. The interview is aired in three-parts on MySpace.
.
2007: Whibley suffers a herniated disc while on tour, forcing the band to cancel the rest of their dates for the year.
.
2008: The band finally take some time off: McCaslin works on his side-project The Operation M.D., Jocz tours as drummer for the Vandals and Whibley tours with then-wife Avril Lavigne.
.
2010: Sum 41 embark on the Vans Warped Tour for the fourth time, however they are forced to cut their Warped dates short when Whibley re-aggravates a disk in his back after being attacked by three men in Japan. Things apparently do not go well for Whibley when he leaves North America.
.
2011: In February, the band release the title track from their fifth full-length, Screaming Bloody Murder.
.
2011: The band will release their fifth full-length Screaming Bloody Murder on March 29th.
