When Kreayshawn broke out in 2011 with her undeniably catchy single “Gucci Gucci,” the song’s video — which saw the female rapper strolling the streets with her posse — stood out as a major part of the MC’s appeal; viewers felt as if they were watching something raw develop before their eyes. Now, armed with a major-label deal and an impending debut album, Kreay Kreay returns with another DIY visual. For “Summertime,” which features a guest verse courtesy of V-Nasty, the spitter busts out a vintage camcorder and chronicles her antics from hiking — with frequent blunt-ripping stops, of course — to visiting the local chicken-and-waffle eatery. We certainly love over-the-top, high-budget music videos as much as the next person. But there’s something innately charming about a simplistic video like “Summertime.” Perhaps it’s because it seems to better capture the essence of its subject. Or maybe there’s a voyueristic element to it all. Whatever the reason, a video like “Summertime,” where the viewer has been given an open door to the daily shenanigans of an artist, strikes a chord.

Kreayshawn gives us reason to approve of her stylistic decision: whether frolicking on Hollywood Blvd. with lollipop in tow or creating havoc on Runyan Canyon, the woman never takes herself too seriously. Sure, her lyrics leave a lot to be desired (“I’m gonna roll her in a ball and just kick her/Can’t believe she pulled that shit at dinner”) but an honest video like this — especially in today’s world of uber-produced Pitbull releases — temporarily squashes any beef we might have with her skills. Good looking out, Kreayshawn!
