A security alert has been issued for Madonna’s concert yesterday in Moscow and Thursday in St. Petersburg. The singer, who is making her way around the world on her current MDNA tour, spoke out earlier this week about the situation involving Russian punk band Pussy Riot, who are currently on trial in the country. In light of this the U.S. Consulate General in St. Petersburg and the U.S. Embassy in Moscow issued a joint “Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Madonna Concerts.”

The statement reads, “This is to alert U.S. citizens in Russia who are planning to attend the Madonna concerts in Moscow on Tuesday, August 7, or in St. Petersburg on Thursday, August 9, that the U.S. Consulate General in St. Petersburg has received information regarding a threat of physical violence against spectators and performers at the St. Petersburg concert on August 9.” The statement also added that Russian authorities “are taking appropriate measures in light of this information” and “expect that enhanced security measures will be put in place” for both concerts.”

Pussy Riot are currently in jail facing charges of hooliganism that stem from the performance of an anti-Vladmir Putin song in a Russian church. Numerous musicians have spoken out in their defense as they stand what many believe to be an unfair trial. Madonna has specially been very vocal about the issue, taking a strong stance against censorship in several statements she’s made to the media. Madonna said, “I’m against censorship, and my whole career I’ve always promoted freedom of expression, freedom of speech. So obviously, I think what’s happening to them [Pussy Riot] is unfair. And I hope that they do not have to serve seven years in jail, that would be a tragedy.”

At the Moscow show, which went off without an incident, the singer told the crowd, “I know there are many sides to every story, and I mean no disrespect to the church or the government, but I think that these three girls – Masha, Katya, Nadya – I think that they have done something courageous. I pray for their freedom.” Watch below:
