She’s carefully avoided talking about it up until this point, but in a new story Katy Perry opens up about her divorce from Russell Brand and how difficult it was to perform every night with so many personal issues on her mind.

“There were times when what was going on in my personal life was so overwhelming that I had to bend over to let those tears fall straight out of my eyes and not my false lashes just as I’m about to go up on that ramp and sing ‘Teenage Dream,’” she said to The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview.

Perry added that people shouldn’t speculate on what went down between the duo, saying, “Nobody knows what really happened except the two people who are in it.” Additionally when speaking about the decision to include her disintegrating relationship with Brand in her upcoming 3D concert documentary Katy Perry: Part Of Me she added, “Honesty has always worked for me … so if it ain’t broke, why f—ing fix it?”
