‘Brave’ Conquers ‘Lincoln’ – What This Weekend’s Box Office Says About Us
Posted 6/25/2012

Disney/Pixar
.
SHE DID IT! Like Katniss Everdeen and Snow White before her, Brave’s Merida proved a formidable box office draw herself. Pixar’s one millionth er… 13th hit in a row, Brave took in $66.7 million, laying waste to all that stood in its path, most notably the weekend’s other big opening Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which flopped into third place with $16.5 million. Sandwiched in between them is this year’s bona fide hit Madagascar 3, which I still keep forgetting exists until Monday morning.

That America is officially ready for female protagonists who are tough and uncompromising isn’t news. As stated earlier, the success of The Hunger Games and Snow White and the Huntsman earlier this year basically proved the point that Brave has now solidified. We are a now a nation that not only accepts but now EXpects for our female leads to kick butt. They are the new role models for a new generation and that’s pretty great!
.
Brave is yet another feather in the hat of Pixar, a hit machine whose hits are also thoughtful, beautiful and inspired, proving this is something that can happen. If Pixar isn’t the best company making films, well then I don’t know what is. Congrats, Pixar! You did it again.
.
Prometheus and Snow White and the Huntsman rounded out the top five with $10 and $8 million, respectively.
