2012 Teen Choice Awards Recap: The OMG’s, The WTF’s, and More

.

It’s the Teen Choice awards, y’all, and you know what that means. Everyone that’s anyone cool is watching them. And you don’t wanna be left out, do you? Well don’t worry, because we’ve got you covered with all the hits, the misses, and the ZOMG moments from the biggest night in teendom.
.
The evening’s hosts, ‘The X-Factor’ judge Demi Lavato and ‘Glee’ star Kevin McHale, were dressed in the most dapper of fashions (though Lovato’s shoulder capped outfit with the 9-ft long ponytail was a little off-the-wall) as Lovato was flooded with a slew of PSA’s from her ‘X-Factor’ co-judges (including fellow new addition Britney Spears) encouraging her to just hurry up and finish already, because they missed her already.

.

But McHale wasn’t safe, either. Lovato was ready for the actor (wheelchair bound only on ‘Glee’) to strut his stuff and get to singing, so she dug up some of the footage from his stint as a former boy bander in NLT. And dude owned it! He’s got some moves that we don’t often get to see on ‘Glee.’

.

First up were lovely ladies Zooey Deschanel and Selena Gomez, both of whom had their iPhones on-stage.
.
“I’m really into texting!” said Zooey, admittedly not a teen.
.
But she’s hip, you guys!
.
“LMFAO…“!
.
They were there to hand out the giant surfboard for “Choice Comedian,” which went to talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, who came on-stage with her Hype Girls Sophie Grace and Rosie, the mini duo behind the adorable-tastic cover of Nicki Minaj’s “Supabass.” But that’s not all, the precious teeny tots were awarded with mini surfboards for “Choice Web Stars,” causing them to utter in their British accents,
.
“Thank you everybody! This is bloody brilliant!

.

It brought the awwws in a big way.

.

.

But then it was dude time. Funnyman Dax Shephard and Olympian (and Flying Tomato) Shawn White teamed up in bro-dom to present the award for “Choice TV Show, Sci-Fi/Fantasy.” And this is a category for the handsome men, if ever there were one. Sexy werewolves, hunky teenage vamps, and even fairytale characters battled it out for the surfboard, and The CW’s ‘The Vampire Diaries’ took home the trophy, looking as sexy on-stage as they do on TV. And many of them took home awards for their individual achievements on the show – be sure to check out our full run-down of the list below!

.

Carley Rae Jepsen’s date-me-or-don’t anthem “Call Me Maybe” is inarguably the catchy anthem of the summer, and the folks at the Teen Choice Awards want to give fans the chance to make their own versions known to the world. And that’s not all. These are some of the only awards that allow for fans to cast their votes, and boy did they ever. Over 134 million of them, in fact. But enough of the facts. Determined to humiliate one another, each of the co-hosts brought some childhood photos to the table. And once again, it was aww-tastic.

.

Unlikely duo Hayden Pannettiere and Wil.i.Am were on-hand to introduce 2001 winners for best tour, No Doubt, who are poised for their big comeback with single “Settle Down.” And while she’s looking SMOKIN’ hot at age 42 (42, you guys!!!!) Gwen Stefani’s outfit was a little bit of a miss. C’mon Gwen, we know you wanna show off your incredibly defined arms, but you couldn’t have done so in some sort of outfit that doesn’t involve a half-kilt? The song’s definitely catchy, but it was so hard to hear that we couldn’t enjoy what’s sure to be a late summer sing-along jam. But no matter. No Doubt is back!

.

The “Choice TV Drama” cast of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ (each of them looking lovely, we might add) took to the stage to both accept their awards (also nabbing a few acting trophies for cast-members Lucy Hale and others), as well as hand one out for “Choice Movie Actor in a Drama,” which went to ‘The Lucky One’ star Zac Efron, who also snagged “Choice Movie Actor in a Romance Movie,” and “Choice Drama Movie” for the film itself.
.
Zefron gushed –
.
I love you guys!” to his fans,
.
I really do feel like the lucky one to have you in my life.
.
Way to go Zefron. We love you, too.

The dudes from ‘Happy Endings’ were there to present “Choice Hotties,” in one of the best presenter/category pairing we’ve seen in awhile. Kudos, TCA. Nominees, all SUPER FOXY in their own rights, included Ryan Gosling, Miley Cyrus, Ian Somerholder, Liam Hemsworth, and many more. But Ian Somerholder was there to accept the award for both himself and his co-winner Miley Cyrus, for whom he thanked her parents, after fans screamed for him to take off his shirt –
.
They’d get mad at me if I did that,” he joked.
.
We wouldn’t be mad if he took off his shirt, and we’re pretty sure the producers wouldn’t have thought twice. We lost that one, internet.

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

Somerholder’s ‘Vampire Diaries’ co-star (and real life lady love) Nina Dobrev joined (tiny!) comedian Kevin Hart to hand out the board for “Choice Musical Act.” Justin Bieber’s better half Selena Gomez (looking quite pretty in pink) accepted her surfboard, apologizing for her lack of band and saying –
.
this is the best birthday present ever!
.
right before she was serenaded on-stage with a platter of cupcakes and a crowd sing-along of “Happy Birthday,” chimed in by Taylor Swift and many more. Happy Birthday, Selena!

.

.

Over-18′ers Lovato and McHale paraded their various ink on-stage, pointing out their tattoos to the crowd (Lovato had crosses and some inspirational words and McHale has a few Beatles’ lyrics:
.
I have a Lennon/McCartney thing, what can I say?“)
.
before proclaiming to the youthful crowd –
.
“Remember one important thing, you guys. THEY HURT. They like, reeaaaaaaalllly hurt.”
.
A word from the wise, y’all.

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

Jordin Sparks (looking positively glowing in day-glo yellow) joined stars from ‘Magic Mike’ and ‘The Vampire Diaries’ who comforted her in an awkward moment by throwing her what looked like an American Flag. But was actually a thong. Nice. Their trophy, “Choice Movie Comedy,” went to the hilarious ‘21 Jump Street,’ which was accepted by co-star Jonah Hill, who thanked his co-star;
.
my favorite male exotic dancer, Mr. Channing Tatum.
.
Hill joked about his ‘Moneyball’ Oscar loss to octogenarian Christopher Plummer, saying:
.
he’s not nominated for anything tonight, so I’m better.
.
But since he both wrote and starred in the film, we’ll allow it. Good on ya, Jonah. We’re still big fans.

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

Flo-Rida performed “Whistle” before being join on-stage by lady accompaniment for his song “Wild Ones.” Dude knows how to own a crowd, you guys. Taylor Swift was on her feet for his whole performance, and Miranda Cosgrove was singing along the whole time. Rida and his backup gal even went into the crowd to get their groove on.

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

‘Thor: The Dark World’ star Zachari Levi was on-deck to pay homage to the phenomenon of The Twilight’ Saga, which took home the “Ultimate Choice” award for the phenomenon that it’s spawned in popular culture. And, in a “WOW” moment, cast members Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner were all in the house to receive all their praise amongst fog and bright lights. And this award was their 41st Teen Choice win, which is a huge accomplishment to say the list. And R-Patz thanked the audience in a huge way, handing his coveted surfboard out to the crowd
.
“not that I don’t appreciate it!
.
he said, as a swarm of lucky teenage girls grasped onto his award.
.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

‘Glee’ star Chris Colfer joined ‘Victorious’ star Victoria Justice to introduce host Lovato, last year’s recipient of the Acuvue Inspire Award, who went this year to ‘iCarly’ herself, Miranda Cosgrove, who looked simply adorable in her sparkly dress.

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

Lea Michele (winner of “Choice Actor in a TV Comedy” and ‘Teen Wolf’ star Tyler Posey brought the crowd to a roar as they debated the age old debate of vampires vs. werewolves.
.
Werewolves come out once every full moon, but vampires suck blood every day!” Michele joked.
.
Seeing as Posey (winner of “Choice Actor TV Comedy”) actually plays one of those things on TV, it doesn’t seem like a fair fight, am I right?

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

Then it was time to hand out the award for “Choice Female Artist,” which went to award show darling (and our vote for one of the best dressed of the night), Taylor Swift.

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

And then, it was time for 18 Teen Choice Award winner Justin Bieber, whose stage antics were a neon chrome display of awesomeness. It was like a trip into The Matrix, y’all. But he rocked it, clad in metallic for his hit single “Boyfriend,” which he then mashed-up into “As Long As You Love Me.” And he took home a slew of new honors to add to his collection, declaring to the audience that they needed to “believe!”

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

Glam gal Taylor Swift, winner for her contribution to ‘The Hunger Games’ soundtrack, handed out the honor for “Choice Movie Actor in a Sci-Fi or Fantasy,” which went to Peeta Mellark himself, hottie Josh Hutcherson, who seems to be getting TONS of praise for his role in the Suzanne Collins smash.

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

And, in a surprise to NO ONE, brit boy band One Direction walked away with the honor of “Choice Summer Music Music Star Group,” though they happened to be in London recording their next album. But that didn’t mean that fans didn’t get a taste of the handsome fellas. They said thanks via video, even treating us to a rather charming montage featuring how they put together their cut up surfboard that came in the mail. Those Brits. They sure know how to charm a girl, don’t they?

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

Past winner Zoe Saldana (in a crop-top number that didn’t thrill us) joined hottie Taylor Lautner (filling out his leather jacket like no other) presented the “Choice Summer Movie Star Male” which went to Thor himself, ‘Avengers’ star Chris Hemsworth, who despite having just welcomed a baby with his wife, seemed energetic and thankful as ever on-stage, praising the voters for letting him
.
live out this dream and let me call it a job.
.
Oh Hemsworth, you so handsome.

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

And then it was time for the chick of the hour, “Call Me Maybe” singer Carly Rae Jepsen. But before she could get her action going, Cat Deeley appeared to give some accolades and awards to the hosts, and reveal that the top “Call Me Maybe” YouTube versions would be incorporated into Jepsen’s on-stage performance, in the chance of a tween’s lifetime. That’s big, y’all. And incorporated, were they ever. In addition to fan videos, red carpet outtakes of nominated celebs from the red carpet offered their takes. It was pretty cute, and offered a decidedly different take on the tired award show performance. ‘Switched at Birth’ star got in on the action, as did Sophie Grace, ‘Modern Family’ stars Rico Rodriguez and Nolan Gould.

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

And with that, teendom’s biggest night was a wrap! Happy Birthday to Selena Gomez, and congrats to all the winners! Take a look at some of our favorite red carpet looks below, as well as the full list of winners. Here’s looking to next year!

.

The cast of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ was looking as lovely as ever. Seriously, is there a more handsome cast of characters on television? For reals. Va va va voom.

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

.

But the cast of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ might just have them beat. Each of these ladies is looking simply lovely in their gowns for the night.

.

(Jason Merritt/Getty Images)

.

But the dress that takes the cake, our favorite red carpet look of the evening, goes to ‘Pretty Little Liars’ star (and winner of “Choice Summer TV Star,” Troian Bellisario. Her nude number was classy, age appropriate, and just a stunner.
