Last night’s Grammy Awards featured some spectacular performances, Lady Gaga in a giant egg and a truly surprising upset when Arcade Fire took home Album of the Year. The awards show this year was heavily focused on performances by the nominees and, in fact, only a handful of actual awards were handed out during the three-and-a-half hour show (take note Golden Globes).
.
Arcade Fire scored the big win of the night, beating out Eminem, Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum and Katy Perry for Album of the Year. The Canadian rock band, who performed “Month of May” from their Grammy-winning LP The Suburbs, along with some BMX bikers during the show, posted on Twitter last night, “OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD. Thank you EVERYONE.”
.
After the show, frontman Win Butler told Billboard of the win, “It was shocking. The idea never even entered my mind, even the the slightest bit, until when they said the name of the album. This award is for our record. We really believe in records. When we make a record, we really put all of our soul into it. To be recognized for that [by] this group of people, in the age of the iPod or in the age of the single or whatever it is, we still really care about records so it means a lot to us.”
.
Lady Gaga also took home an award for Best Pop Vocal Album for The Fame Monster. During her acceptance speech, Gaga—who walked the red carpet inside an egg from which she was later birthed from during her lackluster performance of “Born This Way”—said, “I want to thank Whitney Houston because when I wrote ‘Born This Way,’ I imagined [she was] singing it.” This morning Gaga tweeted, “I’m so honored+grateful we won 3 GRAMMYS. BORN THIS WAY piece was pure joy for Haus to perform. Paws Up Monsters!”
.
It was also a huge night for country—especially for Lady Antebellum who scored a whopping five wins. The trio won Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Country Performance by a Duo or Group for their hit “Need You Now,” as well as Best Country Album for the record of the same name. Rough-and-tumble country star Miranda Lambert, in addition to performing, also took home the award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for “The House That Built Me.”
.
Another upset occurred when jazz bassist/singer Esperanza Spalding snagged Best New Artist over fellow nominees Justin Bieber, Drake, Mumford & Sons and Florence + the Machine. After the show, Bieber tweeted, “As for the awards…of course I wanted to win. Its been & still is a dream to win a grammy. Was I upset…yes. But I was happy for her also. Someone said to me tonight its not your successes that define u but your failures. I lost..but I don’t plan on this being my last chance….I do this because I love it..and I do it for my family friends and fans who support me. I was grateful for the honor and this..Is just the beginning.”
.
Although Cee-Lo Green lost out on winning any awards, his performance of “Forget You,” alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and a lot of really cool muppets, was the night’s real winner—as was Cee-Lo’s outfit, which looked inspired by Big Bird and Las Vegas. Bieber also performed with with Usher and Jaden Smith, and Rihanna joined Eminem and Dr. Dre onstage later in the night for her performance of “Love The Way You Lie” which was followed by Dre and Em’s new song “I Need A Doctor.” Other notable winners included John Legend, who took home three Grammys last night.
