Celebs all across the country have come out in support of President Obama’s statement last week that he condones same-sex marriage. Jay-Z and Ben Folds are the latest stars to praise Obama for his stance.
.
Jay-Z compared same sex marriage bans to discrimination against black people. (The latest same-sex marriage ban was in North Carolina — which last week passed an amendment that says “marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.” Boo!)
.
“I have always thought of it as something that is still holding the country back,” Jay-Z told CNN’s Poppy Harlow. “What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. It is no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination plain and simple.”
.
“I think it was the right thing to do,” Jay-Z continued. “So whether it cost [the President] votes or not — it’s really not about votes, it’s about people. So whether it cost him votes or not, I think it was the right thing to do as a human being.”
.
Ben Folds, who is from North Carolina and makes it a point to never talk politics, broke his silence — and spoke out about the state’s same-sex marriage ban.
.
“It’s embarrassing,” he said. “I don’t believe that the population of people that I know [in North Carolina] agree with that.”
.
Will Smith — who is in Berlin promoting his upcoming film “Men in Black III” — told the Associated Press that Obama’s support of gay marriage is a “brave” move, particularly in an election year.
.
“If anybody can find someone to love them and to help them through this difficult thing that we call life, I support that in any shape or form,” he said.
.
Tons of other celebs came out last week in support of Obama’s announcement — including Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, George Clooney, Ricky Martin, Kim Kardashian, Ellen DeGeneres, Betty White, and Barbra Streisand.
