August 3, 1926 – Legendary singer Tony Bennett is born.
August 1, 1942 – Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia is born.
August 5, 1957 – American Bandstand first airs on US TV. Dick Clark had replaced Bob Horn the previous year when the show was still called Bandstand.
August 1, 1960 – Hip-hop forefather Chuck D is born.
August 1, 1963 - Rapper Coolio is born.
August 3, 1963 - Metallica lead singer James Hetfield is born.
August 1, 1964 – Counting Crows lead singer Adam Duritz is born.
August 3, 1966 – Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson is born.
August 5, 1967 – Pink Floyd release their debut album The Piper At the Gates of Dawn.
July 31, 1971 - James Taylor goes to Number One on the singles chart with the Carole King song ‘You Got A Friend.”
August 1, 1971 – The Concert For Bangladesh, organized by George Harrison to aid victims of famine and war in Bangladesh, takes place at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
August 1, 1980 – Def Leppard make their US live debut when they appear in New York as an opener for AC/DC.
August 6, 1981 – Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks releases her first solo album Bella Donna.
August 6, 1982 – Pink Floyd’s The Wall opens in movie theaters.
August 5, 1983 – David Crosby is sentenced to five years in jail for cocaine and firearms offenses.
August 6, 1988 – Appetite For Destruction, Guns N’ Roses debut album, goes to Number One after spending 57 weeks on the chart and selling over 5 million copies.
August 4, 1990 – Mariah Carey starts a four week run at Number One on the singles chart with “Vision Of Love,” a track on her debut release.
July 31, 1994 – Aaliyah and R. Kelly secretly marry at the Sheraton Gateway Suites in Rosemont, Illinois. Aaliyah is only 15 at the time,so thus the marriage is later annulled.
August 2, 1998 – Beastie Boys start a three-week run at Number One on the album chart with Hello Nasty, the band’s third Number One album.
July 31, 1999 – Christina Aguilera scores her first Number One single with “Genie In A Bottle.”
August 5, 2001 – ‘N Sync starts a three-week run at Number One on the album chart with Celebrity.
August 6, 2004 – Funk singer Rick James is found dead at his Los Angeles home.
August 3, 2007 – Usher marries Tameka Foster six days after calling off their first ceremony. The couple later divorce.
August 1, 2009 – Daughtry goes to Number One on the album chart with Leave This Town, the band’s second studio album.
