Country star Carrie Underwood is back, and with her latest music video for her new album’s title track, “Blown Away,” the former American Idol winner is flexing her cinematic guns. The dramatic video finds the singer caught in both a literal and metaphorical storm, eventually needing to follow a yellow brick road to safety. In case you haven’t guessed, Underwood was channeling the iconic film, The Wizard of Oz for her new video. “We wanted to create this modern-day tragic Wizard of Oz mini-move,” she said in a recent interview. We must admit — at the start of the video we were a bit confused because the character that we eventually learn is Underwood’s father, appeared — at least in our mind — to be her boyfriend. (We’re not creepy: the dude just doesn’t look old enough to be her daddy). But once we came to grips with the fact that the video’s casting may have been a bit off, we quickly were enthralled by the highly-cinematic visual. Yes, the whole video — which finds Underwood running amid a tornado, finding shelter in her room, all while her alcoholic father tramps about the house slamming doors and windows and anything else he can brutally assault — reeks of melodrama. But these days, what music video doesn’t? Really, the fact is that we applaud Underwood’s boldness and cinematic vision for what could have been just another run-of-the-mill, boy-meets-girl-and-breaks-her-heart video.

Instead, Carrie Underwood drew upon the rich history of a classic film and reinterpreted it to serve as her personal backdrop for a country pop song. In the end, we’re left with a stunning shot of a clear-as-day yellow brick road, the path now paved cleanly for Carrie to follow.
