Lana Del Rey Extends Her Artistic Streak With ‘Summertime Sadness’

And now for your Lana Del Rey-provided dose of a depressing, yet artistically stunning music video. As she has done in the past with her VHS-style visuals for “Video Games,” “Blue Jeans” and “Born To Die,” the poufy-lipped songstress behind Born To Die has once again dropped a vintage-looking video — this time for the singer’s swooning cut “Summertime Sadness” for which she’s employed the help of actress Jaime King.

The video, directed by King’s husband, Kyle Newman, and Spencer Susser, meanders through the chilling tale of a relationship gone sour between Del Rey and her lesbian lover, King. Amid the sweeping jump-cuts, we’re taken down the somber path of a suicidal King.

Tales of disappointment and disillusionment should come as no surprise to fans of Del Rey: her previous videos have all emphasized the unfortunate realities — pain, suffering, depression — that accompany even the most seemingly-upbeat of life events.

As has been the case for the entirety of Del Rey’s short career, it’s easy to criticize the singer for blasting her emotions out into the open — oftentimes in what appears to be a blatantly “look at me” fashion. But what distinguishes Del Rey from other artists is her artistic tenacity. “Summertime Sadness” is beautifully shot and edited, and  is as cinematic as it is musical.

It’s a surefire fact that Del Rey is a polarizing figure; not everyone will appreciate her art. But as she demonstrates with her latest video for “Summertime Sadness,” other people’s opinion is less a concern that the evolution of her art.
