While you’re busy checking out all the new music that dropped today, it never hurts to take a peek back at what happened this week in year’s past. For instance, did you know that this week in 1963 the late Whitney Houston (pictured above) was born? Or that this week in 1969, The Beatles shot their iconic Abbey Road album cover? This Week in Music History: August 7- 13

August 8, 1961 – U2 guitarist The Edge is born.
August 9, 1963 – Iconic singer Whitney Houston is born.
August 10, 1963 – 13 year-old Little Stevie Wonder starts a three-week run at Number One on the singles chart with “Fingertips part II,” making him the youngest singer to top the charts.
August 12, 1968 – Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham, who would become Led Zeppelin, play together for the first time when they rehearse at a studio in London’s West End.
August 8, 1969 – The photo session for the cover of The Beatles Abbey Road album takes place on the crossing outside Abbey Road studios.
August 7, 1971 – The Bee Gees start a four week run at Number One on the singles chart with “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart.” It is the group’s first Number One.
August 11, 1976 – Death Cab For Cutie singer Ben Gibbard is born.
August 13, 1982 – Country star LeAnn Rimes is born.
August 9, 1986 – Queen gives what would be their last-ever live performance when they appear at Knebworth Park in England.
August 8, 1992 – A riot breaks out during a Guns N’ Roses and Metallica show in Montreal when Metallica’s show is cut short after singer James Hetfield is injured by pyrotechnics.
August 7, 1993 – Cypress Hill starts a two-week run at Number One on the album chart with Black Sunday.
August 13, 1994 – Woodstock ‘94 is held in Saugerties, New York, and is attended by over 350,000 fans.
August 9, 1995 – Grateful Dead guitarist and singer Jerry Garcia guitarist dies from a heart attack at age 53.
August 10, 1997 – Puff Daddy & the Family go to Number One on the album chart with No Way Out.
August 11, 2000 – Madonna gives birth to a baby boy, Rocco Ritchie, at The Cedars-Sinai Hospital Beverly Hills.
August 10, 2002 – Lisa Marie Presley marries actor Nicolas Cage at a resort in Hawaii. Cage files for divorce four months later.
August 8, 2007 – Demi Lovato is at Number One on the album chart with Here We Go Again, the singer’s second album.
August 12, 2009 – Guitarist Les Paul dies at the age of 94. Paul is credited with developing one of the first solid-body electric guitars
