Got Your 6
.
You might have seen Tom Hanks wearing an odd looking “6″ pin during the Academy Awards show. You might have seen Carson Daly wearing one during a recent episode of “The Voice.” Ryan Seacrest and Steven Tyler were wearing one last night on “American Idol.” So what it is all about? It’s a new initiative geared towards helping veterans after they return home, and Hollywood has taken the lead on getting the word out.
The word is getting out, thanks to the efforts of celebrities from nearly every major studio, broadcast and cable network, talent agency and guild in the entertainment industry. They are all working together with non-profit organizations to launch the “Got Your 6″ campaign. The name comes from the military itself, where the expression “got your six” means “I’ve got your back.” In a military formation, the 6:00 position is always at the rear, or back, of the formation.
.
So what is it all about? From the organization’s website, its purpose is pretty clear:
.
“More than one million military service members will reenter civilian life over the next five years. In order to best inspire these individuals to success, the campaign works to ensure that they return home as civic assets and leaders who will reinvigorate our communities. Many Americans do not feel connected or comfortable with military and veteran culture, nor do they know what steps to take so show their respect and appreciation of those who serve our country in uniform. Got Your 6 focuses on the activation of the American public through six key pillars of veteran reintegration: jobs, education, health, housing, family, and leadership.”
.
In coordinating with these six key pillars, the group has aligned itself with six lead partners: U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring Our Heroes program, Student Veterans of America & The Pat Tillman Foundation, The 100,000 Homes Campaign, Give An Hour™, Blue Star Families & the Military Child Education Coalition, and The Mission Continues.
