We took our first look at After Earth back in February, when Will and Jaden Smith posted some pics to Facebook and WhoSay. We’ve been waiting to hear more about this M. Night Shyamalan film, and now we’ve got a viral video that was created for San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend.

While this viral video doesn’t contain Will or Jaden Smith, it does contain a lot of informational background on the film. The teaser is set up as a prequel to the film and takes us through a Facebook style timeline of events leading up to the film. It all starts with a real historical event – the Tunguska Event in 1908, and capitalizes on a theory that a UFO was involved. From there, we go into deep sci-fi mode. The alien tech is backward-engineered to bring us some of our best scientific developments, but also launches us on a path of destruction leading to resource wars in the mid-21st century.

Enter the Raige family, descendants of one of the chief scientists from the Tunguska Event. They become one of the most influential families in the Earth’s history, and have something to do with the evacuation of the planet following it becoming uninhabitable around 2080. Check out the trailer below and see if you can catch any more clues from the timeline. Despite M. Night Shyamalan’s abysmal performance as of late, we’re still holding on to high hopes for this one. Official Synopsis: In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.
