Posted 7/27/2012

Open Road Pictures
.
We’ve got some great trailers fresh out of Comic-con and new previews for the latest Hollywood has to offer the movie geek in all of us. This week’s round-up includes a new incarnation of a beloved hero, an invitation to return to Silent Hill, a new epic by the creators of The Matrix, another side of the Oz story and a fun wedding romp. Get ready for some sneak peeks of what’s coming soon to a theater near you.

Man of Steel (2013)

.
300 director Zack Snyder’s take on Superman remains very vague. In this second teaser, you get a look at the Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) blending into the life of an ordinary man, with Kevin Costner as Papa Kent through a voice over saying that someday Clark will have to make a choice: “You have to decide what kind of man you’ll grow up to be…whoever that man is. Good character or bad. He’s gonna change the world.” While no indication of a villain or glimpse into Metropolis is seen, the simplicity of Kent’s life before embracing his powers shows the hero trying to be “just anyone” before he decides to take up the cape. The snippet of him in flight makes you wonder just what happened for him to make the choice and a little glad that not all is revealed.

Take-away from trailer: It’s great to see the mighty fine Henry Cavill with a dog, on a boat and in the sky!
.
Silent-Hill: Revelation 3D (2012)

.
Six years after the first Silent Hill movie, Michael Bassett (Solomon Kane) takes the reigns for this sequel which brings back Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) as Christopher Da Silva who had seemingly lost his family at the end of the last movie. Now Revelation opens with Bean as “Harry Mason” who moves from place to place with his daughter “Heather” (Adelaide Clemens) who is plagued with nightmarish dreams of a place she can’t remember. The visuals look amazing and the creatures are as freaky as ever. The 3D is sure to make this a fun scary movie for the Halloween season.

.
Cloud Atlas (2012)

.
The team behind The Matrix have returned with Cloud Atlas and a star-studded cast that includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, and Susan Surandon. The trailer is a gorgeous mash-up of different lifetimes that connect the souls of the characters and how those ties are forged. You can trust the Wachowski siblings to step up the game with cutting-edge visuals and a thought provoking storyline. It’s safe to assume there is probably some sort of revolution brewing in this. And just all the feelings the trailer brings out as it plays on your hope that love can surpass time is enough to draw in an audience.

Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)

.
We’ve heard the other side of the Wizard of Oz story from the Wicked Witch of the West through the Broadway Musical Wicked. Now director Sam Raimi (Spider-man trilogy) brings us the tale of “The Man Behind the Curtain”. James Franco stars as Oscar Diggs, as the man who would become the wizard and follows his journey in the fantastical lands of Oz. After a tornado thrusts him into a new world, Oscar encounters three witches (Played by Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams respectively) who wonder if he is the wizard they’ve been waiting for. Raimi’s knack for immersive storytelling is prefect for the magical quest these beloved characters go on to discover what makes a person good or evil in the beautiful land of Oz. Those waterfalls, and the greenery are bound to pop with the 3D effects, not to mention how fun it will be to have flying “Baboons” coming right at you. Though not in this teaser, it has been confirmed that Bruce Campbell will follow in his tradition of making a cameo in most Raimi movies and is appearing in Oz the Great and Powerful.

Take-away from trailer: The green hand bursting out at the end? Good to see signature Raimi in a kids movie!
.
Bachelorette (2012)

.
After the Success of Bridesmaids, with its all-star comedic cast of women, Bachelorette is an upcoming predecessor to the female buddy flick genre. When Becky (Rebel Wilson) announces she is going to get married, she enlists her ‘friends’ from high school to be her Bridesmaids. Rounding out the cast as the bridesmaids are Lizzy Caplan, Isla Fisher, and Kirsten Dunst who may not be as close to Becky as she remembered. The trailer follows the not so smooth planning of the wedding and shows some of the dynamic between the friends. While Wilson, Fisher and Caplan are known for their comedic chops it will be interesting to see how Dunst will fare since this is her most recent studio movie since How to Lose Friends and Alienate People (2008).

Take-away from trailer: “Look at these people, it’s like a Jane Austen movie on crack”
