Four years ago, MGM put a remake of Red Dawn into production. But some pesky financial troubles meant that the finished film has been sitting on a shelf that whole time, and now that MGM is finally starting to poke its head out again, this movie has a chance to be seen. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Josh Peck (The Wackness), and Adrianne Palicki (G.I. Joe – Retaliation) in the roles originated by Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Charlie Sheen, and Jennifer Grey back in the 1984 original.

The movie follows the kids during a raid of the United States, and how they use guerilla warfare to form a resistance against their invaders. The biggest problem with this version of the film was that the original villain country was set to be China (it was Russia in the first film), but because China has become such a big factor in the international film market (meaning that American movies need to be “sensitive” to all of the money that the Chinese audience could provide in order to make more at the box office), the villains have been changed to North Korean. Apparently the opening sequence was reshot to incorporate the changes, but most of the movie remains unchanged except for a digital replacement of Chinese symbols with Korean symbols. Aside from how fundamentally racist that is – assuming that no one will notice or care about the difference between these two nations – we’ll see if this movie can overcome its behind the scenes troubles and deliver an entertaining action spectacle when it finally hits theaters later this year.

Synopsis: In Red Dawn, a city in Washington state awakens to the surreal sight of foreign paratroopers dropping from the sky – shockingly, the U.S. has been invaded and their hometown is the initial target. Quickly and without warning, the citizens find themselves prisoners and their town under enemy occupation. Determined to fight back, a group of young patriots seek refuge in the surrounding woods, training and reorganizing themselves into a guerilla group of fighters. Taking inspiration from their high school mascot, they call themselves the Wolverines, banding together to protect one another, liberate their town from its captors, and take back their freedom.
