A Huntsman-Centric Sequel to ‘Snow White and The Huntsman’ Slowly Moves Forward, But Will Kristen Stewart Be Involved?

Universal Pictures
.
By now, you probably know all the nasty details about how Kristen Stewart was caught kissing and, uh, maybe doing some other stuff with Rupert Sanders, the director of Snow White and the Huntsman. That’s old news. But how might their extracurricular activities affect the planned sequel? We’ve known for a while that Universal plans on making a sequel – it makes sense, considering the first film pulled in almost $400 million earlier this summer – but how involved, if at all, will Stewart be? Read on to find out.

.
Initially, K-Stew and co-star Chris Hemsworth were signed to a three picture deal (a pretty standard thing with big budget films these days) in the hopes of turning this film into a franchise. Plans were in place to have a second film that would continue those characters’ adventures together, and then a third movie would be a spin-off for the Huntsman to essentially have his own major storyline. It looks like Stewart and Sanders’ affair has sped things along, because THR reports that the studio plans on tossing the idea for the second movie out and making the sequel all about Hemsworth’s Huntsman. Not only that, but their report also said that Stewart would not be asked to return to reprise her role as the armor-wearing fairest woman in the land, which seems like a given considering Sanders is in talks to return to the director’s chair for the sequel. Interesting.
.
But not so fast. Universal quickly issued a statement to the L.A. Times saying the plan is still to have the Huntsman be the main character in the second movie, but that “Stewart’s Snow White could still be a character in that film, despite reports that suggested otherwise.” The plot thickens.
.
Stewart is one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood, so dropping her from the sequel would certainly save Universal a ton of money and would save the production a ton of scrutiny as everyone watches to see if The Affair Round 2.0 might take place. But then they’d be stuck without being able to use Snow White’s name (unless they recast her altogether), so then you’ve got a movie called The Huntsman that doesn’t seem to have a reason to exist without the Snow White character. Meanwhile, Jurassic Park screenwriter and Premium Rush director David Koepp was brought on to write the sequel’s script, but he’s no longer involved since the studio is going in a different direction with the story. So it remains to be seen if this movie will ever even be made at all, but it sure is fun to talk about.
.
What do you think? Should Stewart be in the sequel, or should they go with a Hemsworth-heavy Huntsman sequel and leave K-Stew to move on to other work?
