Adam Lambert may not be planning to join Queen as their permanent frontman, but the singer has confirmed that he will front the legendary rock band for one European festival this year. Lambert will step in as Queen’s singer at the Sonisphere Festival, which was the site of Queen’s final performance with original singer Freddie Mercury.
.

“As many suspected, I can finally confirm: I have been invited by Queen to sing one very special concert! Sonisphere at Knebworth July 7th!” Lambert tweeted yesterday. “Sorry to be coy about the details the past few weeks, but I made a promise to keep it under wraps as best I could. Gonna be a surreal night!”
.

This announcement comes after rampant rumors that Lambert was planning to join Queen for a full tour– or more. Lambert has previously performed with the band twice, once during his stint on American Idol in 2009 and once at the MTV EMAs last year. Queen last played Sonisphere in 1986 with Mercury, who died in 1991. It’s unclear whether this temporary supergroup will perform any of Lambert’s new material from his upcoming album Trespassing, which is due out in March.
.

Lambert previously said of playing with Queen, “I in no way am trying to copy or mimic or replace Freddie or do what he did, that would be insulting to his memory and to the fans that hold him in such high regard. I just am paying tribute. I am excited to sing the songs that he wrote and to try to give them some sort of flair that he would appreciate.”
