The annual Billboard Awards took place in Las Vegas last night and featured a slew of performances by artists like Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen and Carrie Underwood. Meanwhile, the actual statues were handed out to the likes of Adele (who wasn’t actually in attendance), LMFAO, Lil Wayne and Taylor Swift, who was honored as Billboard’s Woman of the Year.

Swift was presented her award by Zooey Deschanel, who noted her contributions to charity and the recent donation of $4 million to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Swift, clad in a rust red gown, thanked her fans and said, “I just love you so much, I’m just so humbled and honored by this.”

Adele won Top Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Digital Media Artist and Top Pop Artist, as well as a slew of awards specific to her album 21. So, as you can see, the Billboard Awards have a lot to do with how many albums and singles an artist sells and gets into rotation. LMFAO also took home numerous awards, including Top Duo/Group and numerous song awards for “Party Rock Anthem.” Other winners included Coldplay, Lil Wayne, U2, Wiz Khalifa and Justin Bieber.

The real highlight of the show, however, was the performances, which ranged from impressive to WTF. Bieber’s rendition of “Boyfriend” was over the top and involved some combination of firemen, geishas and black light paint. If you can follow what’s going on – well, then you are doing better than we are.

Katy Perry debuted her new single “Wide Awake.” Girl has a thing for swing around in the air during performances at award shows, that’s for sure.

Usher also performed a new single, his track “Scream.” It was heavily dramatic, for better or worse.
