Carrie Underwood Comes Out In Support Of Same-Sex Marriage
Posted 6/11/2012

.

Just in time for Gay Pride’s annual celebration, Carrie Underwood has come out in support of same-sex marriage. The country singer, who is a Christian and often sings about her faith in her music, told The Independent that she is in favor of equal rights for all.
.

Underwood told The Independent, “As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love and want to marry. I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.”
.

Underwood, who is married to pro ice-hockey player Mike Fisher, says that it is actually her Christian faith that gives her this belief, not the other way around. The singer was raised a Baptist, but now she and Fisher worship in a non-denominational congregation. She said, “Our church is gay friendly. Above all, God wanted us to love others. It’s not about setting rules, or ‘everyone has to be like me.’ No. We’re all different. That’s what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It’s not up to me to judge anybody.”
.

We find this sentiment particularly interesting and unusual in the mainstream right now as this debate rages. Underwood is famous for songs like her No. 1 hit “Jesus Take the Wheel,” so it’s compelling to see her come out in favor of equality as many Christians denounce it. The article also notes that the singer condemned “people who use the Bible for hate” and said, “That’s not how I would want myself as a Christian to be represented.” What do you think of Underwood’s statements? Tell us in the comments (politely, of course).
