In the current social climate the best way for celebrities to reveal their sexual orientation is with little fanfare. Most musicians and actors decide to confirm the rumors with a simple, ‘Yep that’s me,’ or by allowing an interviewer to mention their significant other. Pop star Mika is the latest musician to exit the closet, and the method of his revelation signifies that it’s both a big deal and really not a big deal at all.

The musician recently told Instinct for their upcoming September issue, “If you ask me am I gay, I say yeah. Are these songs about my relationship with a man? I say yeah. And it’s only through my music that I’ve found the strength to come to terms with my sexuality beyond the context of just my lyrics. This is my real life.”

This statement clarifies an early interview with a Dutch magazine that was titled, “Mika Clears Things Up: Call Me Bisexual.” That article, which the singer told Instinct was “disappointing,” didn’t quite resonate the same as this new one will. And the truth is that Mika was never really in the closet – he never denied his sexuality, but he also never flaunted it. Certainly it helps the LGBT community when someone proudly stands up the Mika has now, but there’s never been any sense that the singer was ashamed of his sexuality. So while it’s great that he’s made things official, it’s also nice to see that this revelation isn’t a big deal. It’s just another person qualifying their identity for the public – which hopefully gives strength to others in similar positions.

The full interview from Instinct has yet to surface but we’re sure there will be more quality soundbites regarding the issue from the singer. Or maybe not. Maybe this statement is all there is to say on the matter. Either way, we salute Mika for having the courage to stand up and officially come out.
