Nas has dropped a video for his new single “Daughters,” a track that seems to hit the rapper really close to home. The clip, directed by Chris Robinson, is equally personal, a journey of a father trying to sort out how to raise a girl and protect her from younger versions of himself.
.
In the single, which comes off Nas’ upcoming album Life Is Good, out June 17, the rapper spits, “They say the coolest playas and foulest heart breakers in the world/God gets us back, he makes us have precious little girls.” The video even features Nas’ own daughter, 17-year-old Destiny Jones, whose infamous social media scandal is referenced in the song and the clip. Nas raps, “This morning I got a call, nearly split my wig/This social network said ‘Nas go and get ya kid’/She’s on Twitter, I know she ain’t gon post no pic/Of herself underdressed, no inappropriate shit, right.”
.
The video itself is fairly simple, following Nas and his daughter as various situations arise in their lives. The rapper grapples with the fact that having a girl means having to watch her hang out with guys with bad intentions – the same ones he once had. Robinson, who also has a daughter, told MTV News of the video, “I think that this song for Nas is so personal, everything in the song is real, that he wanted to share this moment with his fans, with the world, and it was actually his suggestion. I was ready to cast someone, and he was real calm and said, ‘Hey, Dest is gonna be here, I think we need to keep it real.’” He added, “You can be a rapper, or you can be a regular guy with a regular job, but there are certain things that happen as a child grows. So, the concept of the video is that.”
