Thanks in large part to the Cannes Film Festival, this was a great week in red carpets. I look forward to the French-flavored-festival each year because it prompts stars to step out in their best summer-appropriate formal (and some not-so-formal) wear. This week, I took notice of more than a few stunning starlets overseas, while also noting what those celebs who stayed stateside wore out and about. Here’s my list of the best and the worst of the week…
Kim flew out to France to support her newest man — Kanye, of course — as he debuted “Cruel Summer,” the short film he both wrote and directed. Since Kanye’s fashion sense has been called into question on more than one occasion (Fashion Week!), it’s hard to tell whether he or the sartorially-challenged Kim put this outfit together, but either way…it’s not a winner in my book. No matter where she goes or who she’s with, it seems Kim just can’t shake her reality-TV-star-style.

Meanwhile, Kristen Stewart, an actual movie star, looks like anything but in this “ugh” dress. To me, this looks like something you’d fire your stylist over — was nothing else available? I’m just not quite sure what the thought process was behind the selection of this drapery.

Kristen Stewart’s outfit choices weren’t a total fail this week, however, as we loved these Balenciaga pants on her. Perhaps she should just stick to outfits that border on tomboy — they always work better on her in my mind. Kirsten Dunst, on the other hand, looked absolutely gorgeous in this feminine getup, which actually gives me hope for her On the Road co-star’s fashion future. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that Kirsten walked red carpets looking like she had just been released from a shelter of some sort. Here, she looks flawless.

What really shocked me, though, was that Kirsten killed it on the carpet more than once this week. The pretty pink dress pictured here might not have been much of a sartorial risk, but she looks better here than she has in years, don’t you think?

We’ll come back to Cannes — where we found our favorite look of the week — but first I want to talk about Chase Crawford, Anna Kendrick, Cameron Diaz, and Cheryl Cole at the UK premiere of What to Expect When You’re Expecting. (Sidenote: How many premieres has this film had?!? It feels like a million.) I am not loving Anna’s dress here, but I am loving her cap-toed shoes, which are so in right now. Cheryl, meanwhile, looks so good in this dress that even though I know I can’t do tight or white, I want to buy one immediately. Cameron, however, could really benefit from some tayloring on her jumper. Doesn’t she make something like $15M a movie — come on, Cameron! And finally…do you like Chase’s beard? I’m undecided on it!

Lea Michele clearly didn’t want anyone to be undecided about her in this dress, however. I’m guessing she’s convinced at least half of the population to love it, but as I’m not in that half I’m not sure what I think of this look. I guess my overall feeling about this is that she’s young and has a sick body that she probably works really hard for, so she may as well rock it? What do you think of Lea’s cleavage-baring dress?

Elsewhere on the red carpet, Nicole Richie threw things back to the 1950’s with this ensemble. At first glance, I absolutely loved this look. Upon further inspection, however, I realized that I actually only really loved the hair and makeup. The dress, in my opinion, is a bit too costume-esque.

I’ll finish out my roundup first with Diane Kruger, who I believe to be worthy of the best dressed award for the week. Personally, I would get married in this dress. It’s absolutely breathtaking, and she looks impeccable in it. Joshua Jackson is one lucky guy!

Bjork, however, is not so lucky, at least not in terms of style. I’ve long since ceased to expect anything less than absurd from her, but that’s not going to keep me from putting her on my worst dressed list. The only reason she’s not at the absolute bottom of the heap this week is because…

…this woman, a.k.a. Lady Victoria Hervey, beat her to the title. We are not at the beach, lady, and no one wants to see your you-know-what. Put it away, cover it up — just get it off of the red carpet! The naked look will never, ever get you on a best dressed list. Just ask Cher.
