NBC
Inspired by the best selling book from comedian Chelsea Handler this new show follows a 20 something Chelsea, (Laura Prepon) who makes her living as a cocktail waitress. After landing herself in jail for getting a DUI, Chelsea prays to vodka, asking for some guidance. One of her first moves, after getting bailed out from jail was to find a new apartment with her best friend and fellow cocktail waitress Olivia (Ali Wong), so they could be closer to the bar where they work. The two move in with Dee Dee (Lauren Lapkus) who might be the only wholesome part of the show.
Chelsea’s life, and the show revolve around the social scene at the bar. The cast of characters includes the Ted Danson esque bartender Rick (Jack McDorman), and the bar back Todd (Mark Povinelli).
.
Chelsea Handler plays a reoccurring role on the show as Chelsea’s born again Christian sister, Sloane, who has little in common with her younger sister. Chelsea and Sloane’s father Melvin (Lenny Clarke) does his part to support both girls while being a stereotypical uncomfortable dad to two girls.
.
Chelsea is irresponsible, boozy, and sex obsessed giving us a script with almost as many good jokes as there are bad ones. But the cast does a good job of keeping the ship sailing.
.
Strength of Episode: B
The Strength really comes from Laura Prepon and Chelsea Handler. They both bring an original and fresh funny approach.
.
Strength of Characters: B-
While the characters seem pretty stereotypical right now, I have great hope for developments specifically between Chelsea and her sister, Sloane.
.
Potential Strength of Season to Come: B
A fun loving group of ladies seems like a great set up for a show. However I am hoping to see less of the boozy sex obsessed story lines and more of actual character arcs.
.
Overall Grade: B
Pilots are hard. We understand the characters and the set up, but I have hopes for more developed story lines. We’ve got a ways to go.
