Music Videos of the Year: Katy Perry and more
Posted 12/19/2011

.
2011 is nearly over so as part of our year end coverage we’re revisiting some of this year’s favorite music videos. Today, check out five of our favorites, which includes Rebecca Black becoming one of this year’s most polarizing figures and Katy Perry embracing her inner nerd.
.

Rebecca Black “Friday”
.
Let’s face it: You either love this video or you hate it. Well, we happen to love it. Yes, this 13-year old became a viral sensation this year for the childish absurdity of this pop song. But there’s a reason why it got stuck in everyone’s head: it’s catchy! And frankly, we still don’t know whether Rebecca Black should kick in the front seat or the back seat, But perhaps after watching this video again, we’ll have more clarity on the situation.

Lil Wayne “How To Love”
.
Despite his rough exterior, Weezy is actually quite the emotional dude. And via this sensitive, R&B-esque single from Tha Carter IV, Lil Wayne fully sheds his tough-guy vibe, instead choosing to display his compassion for a woman’s struggle. We think it’s a welcome change ; it’s always nice to see a hip-hop heavy, at least temporarily, going the softie route.

.
The Black Keys “Howlin’ For You”
.
If Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney — the two bluesy muscles behind Akron rock duo The Black Keys — ever had any inclinations to get into film school, this video for one of Brothers’ rowdiest hits, would surely be the highlight of their portfolio. Spoofing Quentin Tarantino, Kill Bill-style action flicks with a lead female badass, the Keys made watching this music video feel like you’re lounging in your local cinema. For this one, you better bust out that popcorn!

Dr. Dre feat Eminem & Skylar Grey- “I Need A Doctor”
.
Dr. Dre’s followup up to 1999’s 2001 has been a long time coming. So when one of hip-hop’s most visionary legends took the stage at last year’s Grammys with his protege Eminem to belt out this Skylar Grey-assisted anthem, we suddenly thought it’s grand unveiling might be just around the corner. Unfortunately, such was not the case. Nonetheless, this video–which looks back at Dre’s awe-inspiring career, temporarily eases our pain.
.

.
Katy Perry- “TGIF (Last Friday Night)”
.
One of the main reasons why Katy Perry has emerged as this year’s biggest pop star is because she’s not afraid to be herself. And this video for “TGIF”, which sees Perry fully embracing her brace-wearing inner nerd, is the perfect example. We’ve never seen a pop star like Perry before, fart jokes and all. Something tells us she’s gonna be sticking around for some time.
