Lollapalooza Day One Recap: Black Sabbath vs the Black Keys, Frank Ocean, Chewbacca and Aaron Paul
Posted 8/4/2012

.
Let me start this recap of Day 1 of Lollapalooza by saying no one has ever seen Black Sabbath and Frank Ocean in the same day. It has never happened. Why would anyone even wake up and think that was even a realistic option for a way to spend the day? And it wouldn’t have happened to me except that I have no plan.

I arrived at the festival with a collection of wrinkled and random clothing that I packed half asleep at 6am. I sat next to Frank Ocean’s friend on the airplane and we bonded over the turbulence and the next thing I know I’m invited to hear Frank Ocean play in a tiny venue after the festival. Its always good to just have faith in the festival (and the kindness of strangers) and not plan anything.
.
Hours slept: 6 (pretty solid start).
.
Beverages drank: 4 vodka and vitamin waters (festival survival tip: it’s a very efficient way to hydrate and get nutrients while you intoxicate)
.
Best show I saw today: Ahhhh ,so hard to say. M83 was amazing … who doesn’t love a little saxophone solo? But when it came time to make one of those tough festival choices like: “Do I see the Black Keys or Black Sabbath right now?” I made the only reasonable choice and went to Black Sabbath … because I’m kind of over the Black Keys being played everywhere-all-the-time and Black Sabbath was as badass live as you dreamed they would be.
.
Most fun party of the night: I will never see him in a small, sweaty, intimate venue again before he blows up and is playing stadiums so all I can say is … Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean. Frank Ocean.
.
Celebrity sightings: Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul (looking swoon worthy) while finishing a beer before walking backstage to see The Shins. Yup, Jesse Pinkman rocks out to The Shins.

.
Weird sightings: Chewbacca representing in the crowd. (See image at the top)
.
Interesting trends: The mullet skirt. Short in front and long in back. The ladies of festival are wearing a whole lot of mullet skirts.
.
What people are buzzing about: What Lolla will do to beat Coachella’s Tupac Hologram. The Hologram Tupac even has his own golf cart to transport him to shows around here.

.
Projected bedtime: 4am (cause that’s how Lollapalooza rolls)
