Justin Bieber’s Recent Car Chase May Lead To Anti-Paparazzi Enforcement

Justin Bieber was involved in a high-speed chase with a member of the paparazzi recently on the Los Angeles freeway, resulting in the teen pop star being cited for reckless driving. But a 9-1-1 call made after Bieber had been pulled over revealed that he was actually running from a photographer – at 90 MPH. Now the Los Angeles city attorney’s office is deciding whether to file their first case under a 2010 anti-paparazzi law.
.

According to the LA Times, the law “cracks down on photographers who drive recklessly in pursuit of celebrities or block sidewalks and create the sense of false imprisonment.” The law imposes serious penalties for photographers who cross the line, including possible jail time. Gov. Arnold Schwarznegger, a paparazzi target himself, signed the law in 2010, arguing that laws already exist for reckless driving. Assemblywoman Karen Bass, who sponsored the bill, said in 2010, “Some artists fear there is going to be a terrible accident. This is certainly no attempt to regulate the press.”

Bieber was driving over 80 MPH in a 65 MPH zone on the 101 Freeway and cited by California Highway Patrol for reckless driving. LA City Councilman Dennis Zine called 911 to report Bieber’s driving told reporters he was aware of the paparazzi situation but felt that it didn’t warrant speedy, reckless driving on the part of a celebrity. Zine said, “Any time you do 90, the paparazzi are going to go 90. He was going from the fast lane to the slow lane to the shoulder in traffic. It was a very dangerous driving situation. I figured someone was going to crash, so I called 9-1-1.”

It’s unclear whether the city attorney’s office will go after this particular paparazzo under the 2010, but if they do it will certainly change the state of anti-paparazzi enforcement in Los Angeles and California as a whole. Do you think the paparazzi need to be regulated more? Tell us in the comments.
