Some of us may have been too young to see American Pie when it originally came out back in 1999. If you’ve never seen it, it’s worth Netflix-ing, because we get the feeling you’re not going to want to miss American Reunion, which is out in theaters this weekend. We can’t believe it’s been over a decade since the first film in the series was made, and we’ve started to feel a bit nostalgic about the days gone by as a result of the film’s release. So, we’re going to take a look back at the last thirteen years in the life of Stifler and company…
Spoiler alert! The first American Pie film centered around four high school senior boys who make a pact to lose their virginity before graduation. Hilarity ensues, particularly as it relates to Jason Biggs’ character Jim, the most awkward of the foursome. Eventually, the boys all succeed in their ambitions, albeit in ways they could never have dreamed. The film grossed $235M worldwide.

The second American Pie film released in 2001. This time, the boys were reunited after their first year of college with another common goal — to throw the best summer house party of all time. This film, like its predecessor, ended up being more about the girls in the boys’ lives than anything else. It grossed approximately $287M worldwide.

The third film in the series, American Wedding, was released two years later. By this point the gang was all grown up, as the film centered around the wedding of Jim (Jason Biggs) and the girl he’d lost his virginity to all of those years earlier, Michelle (Alyson Hannigan). All of the friends from the first two films were reunited as a result of the big event. The film grossed $231M.

In the years since that film’s release, Alyson Hannigan’s story has been, arguably, the most successful. Since 2005, she’s played one of the main characters on the hit TV show How I Met Your Mother.

Her onscreen boyfriend, Jason Biggs, hasn’t been quite as high-profile. Aside from roles in bigger films such as My Best Friend’s Girl and Jersey Girl, he’s kept things low-key with smaller parts in smaller projects.

Meanwhile, Seann William Scott, who played the immortal Stifler, has managed to keep a fair amount of activity going on with his career. He’s starred in films such as Old School, The Dukes of Hazzard, Mr. Woodcock, and Role Models.

Post-American Wedding, Chris Klein has remained most famous for being the one-time boyfriend of Mrs. Tom Cruise, a.k.a. Katie Holmes. He’s continued to work steadily, but on mostly small projects. The biggest film he’s done in semi-recent years was 2005’s Just Friends.

Much like Chris, Tara Reid’s post-American Pie fame has had more to do with her personal life than with her actual career trajectory. Several botched plastic surgeries and rumored substance abuse issues have made Tara the butt of many a celebrity blogger joke. However, she seems to have recovered as of late, and she looked lovely (and coherent!) at the American Reunion premiere.

Eddie Kaye Thomas, who played Finch in the films, has had quite a bit more success than Tara in terms of his acting career. He’s featured in films such as Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, as well as all three Harold & Kumar films.

Thomas Ian Nicholas, or Kevin, has flown much more under-the-radar than some of his castmates in the years since American Wedding, though he’s continued to act steadily in small projects.

Mena Suvari, or Heather, rounds out our cast recap. She’s a red carpet darling, and has had roles in projects such as American Horror Story, Factory Girl, Rumor Has It, Domino, and Six Feet Under.

It’s crazy to us that for many of the original American Pie cast members, the franchise continues to be what defines their careers. Will American Reunion top the box office boons demonstrated by its predecessors? We think so! Will you go and see it? Who’s your favorite character in the films?
